Tragedy has unfortunately followed Wine-Dark Sea further into 2019. As many of you may be aware Wine-Dark Sea was involved in a fatal sailing accident on Sunday night of the October long weekend (6/7 October).
It is with the heaviest of hearts that I write that person was Hugh Lachlan Macready. Hugh was an experienced cruiser that Sarah and I met through mutual friends and a love of cruising. Hugh and his wife, Kate, cruised for two years through South-East Asia and were one of Sarah and I’s inspirations for our 2017 adventure. Amongst other things Hugh was also a great humanitarian, having worked with the UN using his telecommunications expertise to re-establish communications networks in disaster affected areas of the world.
Hugh is survived by his wife Kate and his two young sons, Owen and Laurie. The Wine-Dark Sea family’s condolences go out to them.
The rest of the crew, Peter, Stuart, Claudia and Zac, are receiving counselling following what was a traumatic rescue effort.
Wine-Dark Sea was injured in the accident but will return to active duty in due course.

Thanks Cate, Wine-Dark Sea is back in the water and we are doing our stuff down here in Sydney. Cruising isn’t really on my horizon at the moment as I don’t have anyone that is able to share it with me at the moment. We are racing and I have announced a long program culminating in the Melbourne Osaka race in 2023. It’s a two handed race and a lot of the training that Greg and I will do will involve the trips up to Maggie and back over the coming years. Are you still on Percy? I think I recall you talking about washing off the island in the coming years.

Good news you’re back on the water with the challenge of racing . We are planning to leave by the end of the year (sad for me but essential for john) once I get the green lite from NP I’ll be advertising in cruising helmsman and permaculture magazine as the folks we hoped to take over are having a baby ! So I’ll look for a oartnership that I’ll relinquish when the right folks are stable and happy here . Then I hope the young family will take over from me . Si we’ll be based in Proserpine and Townsville (john folks ;as mine are long gone ) .
The seasons progress and unfold until then do busy bees we are as usual .
Hopefully you’ll get some winning streaks under your belt in this next sailing year so wishing you and your crew member all the best . You’ll always be in my prayers and heart as a special person who deserves lots of good things to happen to them 🎶🌻🌺🙏🏽👌💕❤️😘Cate
